Kindermusik by Kaelie is about so much more than learning music! While each activity is centered on music – instrument play, dancing, singing, listening, the list goes on! – and is prepared with developmental goals in mind, like steadying a little one’s gait, increasing their vocabulary, or teaching them that sometimes it’s okay to slow down and listen, every activity is developed to foster a growing community for the young ones and their grown-ups.
How Does This Work?
When you arrive to class each week, you will find yourself surrounded by families going through similar developmental stages, activities, challenges, and excitements. As you connect with these families, this becomes a time for sharing trials and triumphs, recommendations, or simply a laugh at what is going on. On top of this, Kindermusik provides a supportive environment for the little ones to explore the world and people around them, where they can continue developing communication skills, and make new friends! Engaging with others, taking turns, and sharing – instruments, bell towers, ideas – are skills that require awareness and practice and are essential when it comes to building community.
Music can be a Catalyst for Connection
Throughout history, music has provided a means of communication and connection between people. In attending a concert, singing in a choir, or, in our case, attending Kindermusik, a desire to be part of the music is all you need to connect with such a variety of people in your community. Every child, parent, sibling, grandparent, person attending Kindermusik comes from their own background, their own family, and their own day-to-day living. Despite this, they are all there to become a part of the Kindermusik
community: to be learning from the music and activities, learning from one another, and to be having fun!
Developing Confidence
It can be unnerving for anyone to be surrounded by strangers! Often, the ‘shy’ behaviour we see in little ones when greeting someone new or taking part in conversation is related to them feeling that they don’t really know what to do or what to say. In Kindermusik, we start each session in the same way: a ‘hello’ song that greets each child and allows them to choose a movement for the whole group to try. In doing this, we are teaching them the important social skill of saying ‘hello’, helping create more confidence in future greetings and, ultimately, in their future communications. This continues throughout each session as the children (and their grown-ups!) sing, dance, and play along. It can be so much fun engaging with this community around us!
When you’re at Kindermusik, it doesn’t feel like all of this connection and community cultivation is going on. Who knew so much could be happening while you’re making music and dancing along?! Each activity at Kindermusik is designed with goals in mind (fine or gross motor skills, speech, bonding, and so much more), and throughout all of these activities, fostering community remains an overarching goal.
Why does Community Matter?
All humans thrive on interaction, connection and belonging. When we feel understood, appreciated and involved it cultivates our sense of worth and gives us the confidence to reach new heights! We strive to give our families a place where both caregivers and children they feel welcome, supported, encouraged, and connected.
